Tokyo's Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) removed Sony PlayStation chief Ken Kutaragi from responsibility for day-to-day operations after production problems forced Sony to scale back its planned global launch of the Sony PlayStation 3. Kutaragi, president and group CEO, will now be chairman and group CEO.
Effective today, Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), is president and group COO of SCEI.
- Akira Sato, member of the board of directors, was appointed vice chairman.
- David Reeves, president and CEO, and co-COO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), was appointed deputy president of SCEI in addition to his current responsibility at SCEE, also effective today.
- Masaru Kato will remain as deputy president and group CFO.
While Sony says Kutaragi will continue to oversee the entire SCE Group as CEO and exercise his responsibility to further accelerate the development of the PlayStation® business, it is believed Hirai will be managing the ongoing day-to-day business of bringing the PlayStation 3 console to full-level production worldwide, and getting the product onto retail shelves in all markets.
