JACO Environmental, Inc. of Everett, Washington, U.S. and SEG Umwelt-Service/Basis of Mettlach, Germany filed a patent infringement lawsuit in U.S. Federal Court against Appliance Recycling Centers of America (ARCA), based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.

The suit claims ARCA used refrigerator recycling systems and processes invented by SEG and protected by two U.S. patents issued to SEG and exclusively licensed to JACO. The companies claim these patents cover services that ARCA offers to electric utility customers and has used to recycle thousands of refrigerators. The companies seek an undisclosed amount in damages from lost profits and asked the court to enjoin ARCA from continuing to use and market the services.

SEG is refrigerator recycling firm with contracts in 14 European countries to recycle over 1.6 million refrigerators per year. JACO is one of the largest recyclers of household appliances in North America and recycles more than 250,000 appliances annually for 25 clients in the U.S. and Canada.
