Industry and commerce bureau officials in east China's Taizhou City confiscated 534 counterfeit TVs that they said were manufacturers from spare parts, according to news source Xinhua.  These parts included CRTs (cathode ray tubes) that came from illegally imported used TVs. The used functional parts were disguised behind new counterfeit cabinets.  The TVs were illegally labeled with brands names from 18 Chinese and global brands such as Sony, Hisense, Philips, and Changhong.

The Xinhua report described workshops in which CRTs were salvaged from TVs that had been discarded and imported to China illegally.  The operation put the unprotected disassemblers, and later the TV users, at risk of radiation exposure. A Chinese man, described as the owner of a warehouse and storefront selling the TVs, was arrested, but officials would not say what penalties he might face.
