Sharp introduces a fax product that moves beyond the traditional fax. The BroadbandFax uses broadband technology to send and receive faxes directly to e-mail and to create a stand-alone communications tool for the home, home office or business traveler. BroadbandFax also eliminates the need for fee-based Internet fax services, providing an economical, simple solution for business professionals.

Built for convenience, the fax has a simple setup. To use, just plug the unit into an existing broadband Internet service provider, phone line and power outlet. It has a full-function QWERTY keyboard, which allows for quick and easy e-mail addressing. The UX-B800SE combines the features of a traditional fax, copier, phone, and scanner into a single machine with the added benefit of direct to e-mail faxing capabilities. The built-in scanner enables documents to be sent via PDF or TIFF format directly to an e-mail without connecting to a PC. When the document is loaded, the user can type in an e-mail address, press start and the fax is sent directly to the e-mail recipient. The fax is easy to program with a Web-based system that allows any user on the network to enter speed dial numbers, e-mail addresses and e-mail groups from a Web browser.

It offers two-sided send, which lets users fax two-sided documents easily, as well as basic copier functions such as sorting and zoom. The unit also includes 100-page memory and a 6-second-per-page transmission time, as well as a built-in phone/fax smart switch that allows sharing of a single line for fax and voice calls. Heavy-duty, high-speed inkjet printing ensures legible transmissions, and the unit includes a 20-sheet document feeder so larger documents are processed with ease. For added security, faxes can be protected from prying eyes by using the secure receive feature, which requires the user to enter a password to enable the fax to print out. The BroadbandFax will be available in August for a manufacturer's suggested retail price of U.S. $159.99.
