Sony Corporation (Tokyo) said its sales and operating revenue for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2006, which ends March 31, 2007, was 1,744.2 billion yen (approx. U.S. $ 15.2 billion), compared to 1,568.1 billion yen (approx. $13.6 billion) in the first quarter of 2005.
Sony reported an operating income of 27.0 billion yen (approx. $235 million) compared to a loss of 6.6 billion yen (approx. $57 million) in the same period in 2005. Sony reported a net income of 32.3 billion yen (approx. $281 million) compared to a loss of 7.3 billion yen (approx. $64 million) in the same period in 2005.
Sony said Electronics segment sales increased 13.5 percent, with products such as the Bravia LCD TV contributing to increased sales. CRT and Plasma TVs declined.
In the Games segment, sales decreased 29.1 percent over the previous quarter, which the company attributed to a drop in price on the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable, as well as a decrease in software sales.
