The Land and Environment Resource Department of China's Hainan Province and Haikou Municipality has mandated that all fluorine-containing appliances being taken off the market by July 1.

The ban comes after the department determined that 90 percent of the refrigerators sold in the province contain fluorine, which is viewed as being environmentally unfriendly, according to a ChinaTechNews report. The news outlet says about 5,000 refrigerators were sold in Hainan in 2005 and that the brands that will be impacted by the ban include Xinfei, Kelon, Haier, Xingxing, Dakesi, Shilehua, and Tongbao.

The province is planning to build a fluorine recycling facility.
