Motorola to Invest in India Plant

Business and consumer electronics maker Motorola Inc. is investing U.S. $30 million to build a handset and telecom equipment plant in India.

The U.S. mobile phone maker said it would increase its investment at the plant to $100 million throughout the project. The plant will be constructed in Sriperumbadur Hi-tech Special Economic Zone (SEZ) being developed jointly by Motorola and Government of Tamilnadu at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai.

Expected to be operational in 2007, the facility will produce a wide range of Motorola handsets. It will also support production and assembly of network base stations for products across Motorola’s Networks & Enterprise portfolio.
