In the month of January, Wal-Mart plans to open two Neighborhood Markets, five Wal-Mart discount stores and 63 Wal-Mart Supercenters—a record number of stores to open in one month. The new stores are slated to open on Jan. 19 and Jan. 22.
The company says that it is striving to develop shopping centers that cater to diverse communities, while blending with specific U.S. regions. For example, a Wal-Mart in Atlanta Georgia will feature a non-traditional layout that reflects the industrial design of its district's buildings, with Georgian-style columns to blend with local architecture. The more than 200 feet of product offerings feature Hispanic, Caribbean, Asian, European, and kosher products to accommodate the international mix of this community.
Further examples include an Austin, Texas Wal-Mart designed using brick, an earth tone color palette and locally quarried Austin stone; a Villages, Florida location will offer a hearing center, vision center and drive-through pharmacy, to accommodate the many retired citizens of the area.
