The Philippines' Intellectual Property Office said it denied the petition of a rice dispenser producer, Johnny Konwat, to use the brand name "Standard."

The ruling is a victory for Standard Appliances Corp. and closely tied Standard Electric Manufacturing Corp. of Pasay City in the Philippines, which inQ7 says have been using the Standard brand name since 1966 for appliances such as fans, toasters, rice makers, washers, irons, water heaters, TVs, gas stoves, and electric pots.

The case dates back to Oct. 19, 1995, according to the Intellectual Property Office, when the case was filed to determine if businessman Johnny Konwat should be allowed to make use of the "Standard" brand name.
