Equator Corporation (Houston, Texas, U.S.) this week launched the first-of-its-kind Cobra-Hybrid full-size combo washer-dryer for household use. The appliance is designed to offer the advantages of both a top loading and a frontloading machine. It is a top-loading washing machine that uses horizontal axis washing technology.

The unit loads from the top, said to make it usable without bending like a top-loader. The horizontal axis washing system gives it the energy efficiency, low water use, low-detergent use characteristics of front-loading machines.

Internet-Connected Laundry Appliance
The Cobra-Hybrid's features also include a one-touch start, delay start, a Load-Sensing Adaptive Fill, and internet connectivity for remote diagnostics.

In addition, it is the first laundry appliance to use the Intellifill™ an intelligent automatic detergent dispensing system, allowing a bottle of liquid detergent can be loaded into the appliance, which will then dispense the correct amount for each load of laundry.

The hybrid appliance has no mechanical knobs, operating completely from an LCD touch display, which can display the full owner’s manual and a Help feature. Later models will have language modules, making the unit suitable for overseas markets. The Cobra-Hybrid is a 220-V venting unit, designed to be ideal for good for single-family homes.

Designed for Simple Operation
The unit is said to be unusually simple to operate. The users presses a single button at the front of the machine and the lid of the appliance pops open, with a light to illuminate the 3.6-cubic-foot drum. The users loads the laundry (up to 22 pounds), closes the lid and press Start. The machine automatically fills with the correct amounts of water and detergent.

When the wash cycle is complete, the dry cycle begins automatically and sensors enable the unit to dry clothes to the level of dryness the user desires.

“A world-class design team has been instrumental in building this unique machine – it is beautiful looking, eco-friendly and precision engineered," says Equator Advanced Appliances President Atul Vir. "We can confidently state that this is the most advanced laundry appliance in the world, designed and made in America."

The Equator Cobra-Hybrid will be exhibited for the first time at the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show (KBIS), April 21-23, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. It will retail for approximately U.S. $2,000 and is expected to go on sale in the summer of 2006.
