Okinawa Appliance Market In Transition

Competition is coming to the appliance market in Okinawa with the arrival of large retailers from mainland Japan, according to a report from Japan Today. Large discount sellers such as Kojima Denki and Yamada Denki are coming to the Okinawa islands, which is a Prefecture of Japan but remains culturally independent.

The report says local retailers are seeing sales slow as Okinawans turn to the new chains, especially since the recent Japanese launch of all-digital television broadcasts. Hot weather coming to the subtropical islands is spurring more air-conditioner sales as well. The Japan Today report says the many small retail shops in Naha City, Urasoe City and Okinawa City can offer more personalized customer service but are unable to compete against the large merchandisers on price.
