Toshiba's Digital Products Division, a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., announced the availability of the company's first Restriction on Hazardous Substance (RoHS)-compatible notebook sold at U.S. retail outlets. Toshiba's Satellite A55-S1064 notebook is currently available at Wal-Mart.

"The launch of an RoHS-compatible notebook sold through the world's largest retailer is part of Toshiba's overall commitment to the environment," said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing, Digital Products Division (DPD), Toshiba America Information Systems. "Toshiba DPD believes strongly in ensuring all our notebooks are compatible with the RoHS standard. It's part of Toshiba Corporation's goal to double its overall product and business process eco-efficiency from 2000 to 2010."

Also designed to meet the EPA's Energy Star requirements for power management, the Toshiba Satellite A55-S1064 is available for less than U.S. $700 and includes a 1.6-GHz Intel(R) Celeron(R) M Processor 380, 512 MB DDR2 memory, 40-GB hard drive, a 15-inch TruBrite(TM)-enhanced display, a CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive, and built-in Atheros(R) 802.11 b/g wireless LAN.

"The addition of the RoHS-compatible Toshiba Satellite A55 model gives our customers the option of purchasing a high-quality, high-value product that is also environmentally conscious for the first time from a major U.S. retailer," said John Kooy, Wal-Mart's vice president of electronics.
