The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) revised standard for the Performance of Portable Household Electric Room Air Cleaners, ANSI/AHAM-AC-1-2006 has gained approval by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

According to AHAM, the standard is the only performance test method to measure room air cleaner performance of removal of airborne particulates recognized throughout the entire U.S. The standard was recently updated by AHAM following an independent peer review by a panel of indoor air quality experts.

In addition to the AHAM independent peer review, the ANSI approval process included a separate review of the standard by an ANSI consensus panel of interested stakeholders. This process provides all parties with an opportunity to review and comment on the standard.

ANSI/AHAM-AC-1-2006 supersedes the previous 2002 ANSI-approved version and includes the addition of a suggested room size calculation. The accredited standard also includes the addition of optional operating power and standby power tests and several clarifying edits. Test results for particulate removal obtained using the 2006 version will be the same as those obtained using the 2002 version.

The AC-1 test method serves as the basis for AHAM’s Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) Certification Program and is also used by Consumer Reports in its air cleaner performance testing. The CADR Certification Program, open to all manufacturers, verifies manufacturer product performance ratings based on room size for the removal of smoke, dust and pollen. Currently, 25 manufacturers have their portable room air cleaners certified through the CADR program.
