Voltas Limited, the air-conditioning and engineering business unit of Mumbai, India-based Tata Group, has said it will drop plans to re-enter the refrigerator market in 2006. The company said overcapacity and the stagnancy of the market convinced it that now was not the time to re-enter the market.

The company sold its Voltas brand and refrigerator business to Swedish appliance giant Electrolux in 2000 and agreed not to make market refrigerators for 6 years. With that restriction due to expire in 2006, Voltas had announced its intention to begin production of refrigerators again under the Indicool brand name. the company had even taken steps to organize a test-market campaign of 55-l Coldcell refrigerators in several cities in India.
