Commercial refrigeration systems producer Master-Bilt donated two walk-in coolers, measuring a total of 160-square feet, to Ocean Springs, Mississippi, U.S., on September 14, 2005, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

The company is based in New Albany, Mississippi. To help residents of their home state, Master-Bilt employees sent two Ready-Bilt walk-ins, one a cooler and one a freezer, to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs. The walk-ins were both stocked with pan racks to keep trays of food and other supplies refrigerated prior to being handed out to hurricane victims.

Two months after delivery, Reverend Mitchell Hedgepeth of St. Paul’s told Master-Bilt that both walk-ins are still helping to serve 500-600 plates of food each day. According to the Reverend, a fellowship hall at the Church remained standing in the aftermath of the hurricane and the location is now where workers and residents are being fed daily.

Donations Still Needed

“We’re happy to be able to feed so many, but we are asking for meat donations. We’ve got milk, eggs, and other foods, but are in need of a meat supply, if anyone can help donate that," Reverend Hedgepeth said.

Master-Bilt said the coolers will remain at St. Paul’s in Ocean Springs, delivering food for those rebuilding their lives, until everyone is back in their homes.

Master-Bilt is a member of the Standex Foodservice Group, marketing refrigeration solutions to restaurants, convenience stores, dairies, warehouses, and drug stores.
