China has 925 brands officially designated a "Chinese famous brand" by the China State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. China news agency Xinhuanet. Three brands from two companies are also officially "world famous," including the Haier refrigerator.

The administration began to appraise brands for the designations starting in 2001. A survey this year of 121 "famous brands" showed sales volumes soaring on average 51 percent from 2002 to 2004, with exports jumping 86 percent.
