The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) and Egat Plc (Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand) are cooperatively establishing stricter standards for refrigerators and air-conditioners, the Bangkok Post reports.

Air-conditioners and single-door models of refrigerators will receive an energy efficiency rating of from one to five, starting in 2006. An Egat official is quoted saying that the goal is to reduce energy use by these appliances by 20 percent. The standards will apply to Thai-made and imported goods, and will restrict appliances unable to earn the least-efficient score of five. In addition to saving energy, it is hoped the standard will help stem the tide of counterfeit appliances coming into Thailand.
