Appliance retailer Lowe's and its customers have responded to calls for donations for those affected by Hurricane Katrina by contributing U.S. $3 million in 8 days to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Including Lowe's match of up to $2 million, the company and its customers have raised more than $5 million for Red Cross disaster relief. Lowe's activated its in-store customer donation program on Monday, August 29 at all of its more than 1,125 stores throughout the U.S., and says it will continue accepting donations throughout the month of September.

"Over the Labor Day weekend, community support poured in for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief," said Larry D. Stone, chairman of Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation. "This overwhelming response demonstrates that our customers are equally as passionate as we are about assisting the Red Cross in its efforts to help the thousands of families, friends and employees in our communities throughout coastal Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama that have been left homeless as a result of this disaster."

During 2004, Lowe's and its customers raised $1.5 million to assist overall Red Cross efforts, including relief to the thousands impacted by the 2004 hurricanes that hit the southeastern U.S. Since 2000, Lowe's has raised more than $12.5 million for the Red Cross, including Hurricane Katrina relief efforts to date.

Lowe's had three stores closed in Louisiana, and was focusing on replenishing more than 45 stores in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama with emergency products to assist in the rebuilding and recovery efforts.
