The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) was recognized by The Alliance to Save Energy, a U.S.-based energy alliance, for its "exemplary illustration of and commitment to energy-efficient policy and practice."

The Alliance to Save Energy recognized ASHRAE's development of the Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Office Buildings with an honorable mention award as part of its annual Stars of Energy Efficiency Awards program. It was the first time the Alliance has given an honorable mention.

According to ASHRAE, the guide was developed by a committee representing a diverse group of energy professionals drawn from the ASHRAE, the American Institute of Architects, the New Buildings Institute, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The guide provides recommendations on how to build energy efficient small offices buildings that use significantly less energy than those built to minimum code requirements. The recommendations in the guide provide benefits for the owner while maintaining quality and functionality of the space.

"Since the 1970 energy crisis, ASHRAE’s commitment to developing economic energy-efficiency standards for buildings has led to increasingly improved performance," Lee Burgett, P.E., ASHRAE president, said. "We seek to eclipse those gains by providing advanced energy-efficiency guidance. Our efforts are focused on the long-term goal of creating net-zero energy buildings. We are appreciative of the Alliance’s recognition of our work."
