Haier Appliances India (HAIPL) plans to make India a sourcing hub. The appliance maker also proposes to launch more 'India-centric' products.

The Indian unit has also lined up its own manufacturing facility as a green field project near New Delhi. The factory will primarily be for television sets. The company also has a U.S. $3.5 million R&D center, which is to be commissioned by December.

"We aim to manufacture indigenous home appliances. Our upcoming R&D center would primarily aim at designing products that suits the taste of Indian consumers," said T K Banerjee, president and CEO, HAIPL.

HAIPL started its Indian operations in 2003. Its home appliances range includes color televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners, microwave ovens, clothes dryers, dishwashers, DVD players, and home theater systems. Recently, the company marked its entry into the fast growing Indian mobile telephone segment. However, the company does not have immediate plans to set up manufacturing facility for mobile phones.

"All our products are priced a little higher than the leading brands available in the country. This is to explode the myth that Chinese products are cheaper and are of inferior quality," said Mr. Banerjee. "We are here to make profits and it's our mission to provide quality products and services at par with international standards."

Around 60 percent of the company's turnover comes from selling color televisions, while 35 percent comes from refrigerators. (Business Standard)
