South Korean appliance maker LG Electronics Inc. has unveiled a new vacuum-cleaning robot. The new model, named Roboking, is set to go on sale on July 15 in South Korea, Britain, Russia, and Israel, the company said in a statement.

The retail price for the new automatic vacuum cleaner, which looks similar to Electrolux's Trilobite models, is set at 1.49 million won (approx. U.S. $1,435), LG Electronics said.

The price is almost 40 percent less than Electrolux's Trilobite models, which carry a price tag of between 2.3 million won and 2.5 million won in South Korea.

Equipped with 22 gyro-sensors, which are expected to significantly improve the machine's stability and object-detection capability, the new vacuuming robot can reportedly turn before running into walls and avoid falling off platform edges, according to Park Se-won, a spokeswoman at LG Electronics.

"It is the first time in the world that LG has produced the new vacuum-cleaning robot incorporated with a gyro-sensor," Ms. Park said. "With the 22 gyro-sensors, this machine becomes smarter than its predecessors."

LG Electronics expects the South Korean vacuum-cleaning robot market to rise to around 45,000 units this year from last year's 20,000 units, according to the statement.

"Vacuum-cleaning robots will soon emerge as a must-have household good like refrigerators and washing machines," said Kang Shin-ik, vice president of LG's domestic marketing division. (Yonhap)
