Sony to Cut Welsh Television Jobs

Electronics giant Sony is axing 650 workers as part of a shake up of its UK operations as sales of traditional-style TVs decline. The company's factory in Bridgend, South Wales, is to be closed by the end of the year. Jobs will also go at its sister plant in nearby Pencoed, but the factory itself will remain open.

Growing demand for flat screen TVs across the UK is to blame for the end of the South Wales plant. The latest round of job cuts comes after the company axed 300 workers back in January, largely due then to the rise in flat screen TV demand. But the company has said that the increased take-up of flat screen TVs since then had still taken it by surprise.

"The demand for CRT based televisions within the UK and Europe has fallen significantly and the transition to flat TV has been much quicker than we first expected," a company spokesman said.

"It is with regret, therefore, that we have to announce the closure of the Bridgend site and the ending of CTV production within the Pencoed site resulting in 650 job losses.

The spokesman said the Pencoed site will remain open with the company continuing to develop opportunities and use the skills available there.

They will center on areas of service, logistics, the customer support center, high technology professional camera, and external businesses that will provide value to the operation. (Yahoo, Sky News)
