About one-fourth of the 2,700 workers at an Electrolux AB refrigerator plant that is scheduled to be closed have been told they likely will be laid off in September as manufacturing begins winding down.

Production at the Greenville, MI, U.S. factory now is expected to continue into the first quarter of 2006, the Swedish appliance maker announced. When Electrolux announced in January 2004 its decision to close the plant, officials said they expected it to remain open until about the end of this year.

Layoffs will come in phases and be based on seniority.

Production will be transferred to an Electrolux plant opening this summer in Juarez, Mexico. (AP)
