Vittorio Merloni, the chairman of Italian appliance maker Indesit Company, has been given a Gei Award "in recognition and appreciation of his work in favor of major industrial sectors, in terms of both production and marketing, which has done much to improve Italy’s image abroad."
The award, which was presented to Mr. Merloni in New York, NY, U.S. in the presence of representatives of the business community, is organized by Gruppo Esponenti Italiani (Gei), a New York-based non-profit association formed in 1974 that focuses on relations between the USA and Italy. The organization gives awards to Italian and American figures who help develop these relations and improve Italy’s image in the U.S.
"Italy is currently going through a period of economic and political difficulties. But I’m an Italian businessman and as a businessman, I can hardly be a pessimist," Mr. Merloni said. "And as an Italian I feel very attached to my country, even while working in a global context, which is why I wish to conclude on an optimistic note. I am confident that Italy, which is rich in human, managerial resources, will find new ways to boost economic growth."
