South Korean home appliance manufacturers are reporting a surge in sales of air-conditioners as weather officials forecast the nation may have its hottest summer in a century, industry sources said.
In the first 3 months of this year, LG Electronics Inc. said pre-registered sales of air-conditioners had more than tripled since a year ago.
Its rival Samsung Electronics Co. also saw pre-registered sales of air-conditioners jumping three-fold from a year ago, the source said.
Daewoo Electronics Co., a smaller competitor, said sales of air-conditioners, excluding pre-registered sales, had doubled from the months of March and April last year.
To meet the surge in demand, the appliance makers are planning to operate their air-conditioner plants at full capacity 24 hours a day, the source said.
Last year, South Korea had one of its hottest summers in history when heat waves pushed temperatures to 35 degrees C or higher in some parts of the country. (Yonhap)
