Consumer electronics maker Sharp Electronics Corp., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled approximately 373,000 of its 27-in Sharp Conventional Tube (CRT) televisions.

According to the company, the unit's power button can break, allowing objects to be inserted through the opening. Foreign materials such as crayons, metal objects, or straws can ignite, posing a fire hazard.

Sharp has received 23 reports of fires. One incident is reported to have resulted in U.S. $20,000 in property damage. The others resulted in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled televisions include models 27RS50, 27RS100, and CSR5027. The televisions were sold at electronics retailers, department stores, and mass merchandisers throughout the U.S. from March 2001 through February 2005 for about U.S. $250.

Consumers were advised to unplug and stop using the televisions immediately and contact Sharp for a free repair.
