China produced nearly 80 percent of the microwave ovens sold worldwide in 2003, according to a survey report recently released by the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association.
Attracting home appliance plants from Japan and other industrialized economies, an estimated 46.2 million microwave ovens were sold in 62 surveyed economies in 2003. Plants located in China provided 36.6 million of them, 79.3 percent of the total, up from 44.9 percent in 2001.
Among other home appliances, vacuum cleaners made in China accounted for 34.8 percent of those sold in the 62 markets, up from 19.0 percent.
China also captured more than 30 percent of the global market for refrigerators and washing machines. (Kyodo)
