Samsung Aims to Lead MP3 Player Market Mar 21, 2005

Samsung Electronics Co. said it will invest its resources into the booming digital music player industry with the aim of becoming the world's top MP3 player maker by 2007.

Some analysts expect the move to spark a change in the global digital music player industry, currently dominated by the U.S.-based Apple Inc., which has enjoyed success with its iPod player.

While declaring its ambitious goal, Samsung unveiled six new digital music players at a press conference in Seoul, Korea. One of the latest models, YP-T8, has a memory capacity of 30 gigabytes and can store up to 2,500 songs.

To gain global market share, Samsung said it will use its worldwide marketing and sales networks. "Using our global networks, we will focus on exploring new markets in the physical world and improving customer management in the cyber world," said Ahn Tae-ho, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics.

Top executives of Samsung, which is also said to be the world's number-two memory chipmaker and number-three mobile phone manufacturer, have reportedly said they will seek to capitalize on the high-growth digital music player market.

According to a recent report by research company IDC, global MP3 player sales are expected to grow to 35 million units this year, compared with 25 million last year. (Yonhap)
