The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Applica Consumer Products Inc. (Miramar, FL, U.S.) and Elec-Tech Interational Co. Ltd. of China, announced the voluntary recall of Black & Decker(R) brand ProBlend(R) blenders.

The blender blades can weaken or break during use while making frozen beverages, presenting a risk of injury if taken into the mouth or swallowed. Applica received 18 reports of incidents regarding broken blades. No injuries have been reported.

The recall includes ProBlend models BL5000, BL5900, and BL6000. The recalled ProBlend products are 5-speed, 550-W blenders with 48-oz marked glass jars. Each model has a die-cast, brushed stainless-steel base bearing the name "Black & Decker." The model number is located on the bottom of the product.

About 500,000 units were sold at retailers throughout the U.S. from December 2003 to January 2005 for between U.S. $40 and $60.

Consumers were advised to stop using the product immediately and contact Applica to receive a free replacement blade assembly.
