LGE Tops U.S. CDMA Market for Second Year Mar 2, 2005

LG Electronics Inc. (LGE) said that it took the largest piece of the U.S. CDMA mobile phone market in 2004.

The company cited figures from a report from IDC, a U.S.-based market research firm, which named L.G Electronics as the market leader for the second consecutive year.

According to IDC, LGE shipped 15.99 million CDMA handsets to the U.S. to maintain the lead in terms of market share with 27 percent.

CDMA (code-division multiple access) is one of the most commonly used third-generation mobile phone technology.

Samsung Electronics Co. had 18 percent of the market and sales of U.S. $10.98 million. Finland's Nokia Corp. was ranked third with a 15 percent slice. It sold 8.8 million handsets.

LGE attributed its foothold in the U.S. to the new models, such as its next generation multi-media phone LG-VX7000 and voice-recognition phone LG-VX6100.

LG was at third place in overall mobile handset sales in the fourth quarter of 2004. The electronics maker Samsung took fourth place, and the top two spots went to Motorola and Nokia.

LGE aims to expand in the GSM market as well. It sold nearly 5 million GSM phones last year, only the second year it has sold the handsets. (The Korea Herald)
