HRAI Obtains Tax Exemption for ENERGY STAR HVAC Equipment Feb 22, 2005

Chair John Murphy announced that the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) has successfully obtained approval from the British Columbia (BC) government for a provincial tax exemption for ENERGY STAR(R) HVAC Equipment. As a result, qualifying energy-efficient residential furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps are exempt from social service tax (PST) in the province of BC if purchased or leased for residential purposes from Feb. 16, 2005 to April 1, 2007.

HRAI began this process in October of 2004 by writing to the Gary Collins, BC’s minister of Finance, and strongly urging the Ministry to include the tax exemption in the 2005-2006 budget. HRAI believes Improvements in the average energy efficiency of these products in British Columbia will substantially decrease both energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions in this sector.

A Notice to Suppliers and Installers of Residential Furnaces, Boilers, and Heat Pumps under the Social Service Tax Act issued by the BC Ministry of Provincial Revenue outlines what qualifies, explains when the exemption applies to purchases and leases, and provides information on refunds for contractors.
