Canada's Unit Heater, Furnace Shipments Increase

According to data released by the Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), shipments for unit heaters and residential furnaces increased, while air-conditioning units and chillers decreased during the fourth quarter of 2004.
During the period, unit heater shipments increased by 14 percent from 15,481 in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 17,588 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Year-to-date shipments increased by 19 percent, from 36,962 for the fourth quarter 2003 to 43,976 for the fourth quarter 2004.

Residential furnace shipments increased 4 percent from 95,193 in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 98,964 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Year-to-date shipments increased 8 percent, from 292,127 for the fourth quarter 2003 to 314,049 for the fourth quarter 2004.

Commercial air-conditioning shipments decreased 3 percent, from 11,285 in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 10,893 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Year-to-date shipments decreased by 16 percent, from 40,828 for the fourth quarter 2003 to 34,316 for the fourth quarter 2004.

Residential air conditioning shipments decreased 67 percent from 24,996 in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 8,170 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Year-to-date shipments decreased by 18%, from 282,858 for the fourth quarter 2003 to 232,745 for the fourth quarter 2004. A member's reporting error in the second and third quarter of 2004 resulted in a significant decrease of 67 percent showing up in the fourth quarter.

Please note there was a calculation error in HRAI's Nov. 11th, 2004, 3rd quarter report. The unit heaters year-to-date shipments were increased by 33%, from 21,481 for the third quarter 2003 to 26,387 for the third quarter 2004.

Chiller bookings decreased 6 percent from 197 in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 186 in the fourth quarter of 2004. Year-to-date shipments increased by 12 percent, from 666 for the fourth quarter 2003 to 749 for the fourth quarter 2004.
