Cell phone and electronics maker Kyocera Corp. will eliminate 600 jobs in San Diego, CA, U.S. by the end of March 2005 as it moves manufacturing and service operations abroad.

Shifting most of the manufacturing operations to a Kyocera plant in Tijuana, Mexico will lead to the elimination of about 450 manufacturing jobs, Kyoto, Japan-based Kyocera said.

An additional 150 jobs in San Diego will be cut as more of Kyocera's global service centers take on service and repair work, the company said. The action is aimed at speeding up repair turnaround times and curtailing shipping costs. (Bloomberg)
