The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) announced the publication of its 25th product performance evaluation procedure, AHAM-OV-1-2005 Standard for the Determination and Expression of Oven Volume. The OV-1 Task Force has completed all necessary internal AHAM approval procedures for the OV-1-2005 performance standard, and it will be published as an AHAM standard. The association said it will now begin the process of obtaining national accreditation for the standard through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

The standard establishes a uniform, repeatable method for determining and expressing the overall volume and usable oven space of the cooking cavity of household ovens, AHAM said. The scope of the standard includes residential microwave, electric and gas freestanding ovens, and built-in ovens.

AHAM is an accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) through ANSI. AHAM standards are processed through ANSI under the canvass method, which includes extensive peer review.

"We believe that this is the first standard to address volume measurements in this level of detail, and it will provide a uniform means of stating oven volumes to assist retailers and consumers in comparing products," said Larry Wethje, AHAM’s vice president of Technical Services. "This standard is relevant to today’s market and was developed by manufacturers for voluntary use."

Development of the standard began in March 2004 and was managed by Richard Cripps, AHAM senior project engineer, and Irene Latack, manager, business analyst, Product Delivery Teams of Whirlpool Corporation and Chair of AHAM’s OV-1 Task Force.

AHAM is also considering submitting the standard to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), for adoption as an international standard.
