Amana Refrigerator Plant Looks to Expand Jan 7, 2005

An Iowa refrigerator manufacturing plant owned by Maytag Corp. has applied for a state tax credit to expand.

Amana Refrigeration Products would create 200 jobs, according to an application recently approved by Iowa County supervisors.

The appliance maker is seeking assistance from the New Capital Investment Program, which grants tax credits to companies expanding existing operations. The amount sought by Amana was not specified, but is typically 10 percent of the total capital investment.

The application form said Amana Refrigeration plans to invest U.S. $65.5 million in machinery and equipment to make a new product line at the Middle Amana plant.

The project will retain 360 regular positions, 150 seasonal temporary workers, and 200 new jobs.

The Iowa Department of Economic Development Board is scheduled to consider the application when it meets Jan. 20.

A 3-year labor agreement approved in September by members of International Association of Machinists Local 1526 allows Amana Refrigeration Products to move to a 24-hr manufacturing operation. (Associated Press)
