The International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) estimates that production of the one-billionth tonne of steel will occur today. This is the first time the world will produce a billion tonnes of steel in a single year.
World crude steel production for 2004 stood at 945.2 million metric tonnes (mmt) at the end of November. With average production of around 2.8 mmt per day, IISI expects the one-billionth tonne will be produced today.
World crude steel production in 2003 was 968.3 mmt. IISI expects that production in 2005 will again exceed one billion tonnes. The following list shows world crude steel production for the past 10 years:
1994 - 725.1 mmt
1995 - 752.3 mmt
1996 - 750.0 mmt
1997 - 798.9 mmt
1998 - 777.3 mmt
1999 - 789.0 mmt
2000 - 847.6 mmt
2001 - 850.2 mmt
2002 - 90.8 mmt
