The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that in October 2004, U.S. steel mills shipped 9,326,000 net tons of steel, a 0.6-percent increase from the 9,273,000 net tons shipped in October 2003, and a 1.0-percent increase from the 9,233,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, September 2004. For the first 10 months of 2004, steel shipments were 94,765,000 net tons, representing a 6.3-percent increase from the 89,169,000 net tons shipped during the same period in 2003.
A comparison of year-to-date steel shipments shows the following changes between 2004 and 2003: service centers and distributors, up 4.8 percent; automotive, up 5.8 percent; construction and contractors' products, up 7.4 percent; oil and gas, up 11.5 percent; machinery, industrial equipment, and tools, up 20.2 percent; appliances, utensils, and cutlery, up 3.6 percent; containers, packaging, and shipping materials, down 1.4 percent; and electrical equipment, down 8.1 percent.
