Royal Philips Electronics of The Netherlands announced that its HeartStart Home Defibrillator and MiraVision Mirror TV have been named by Fortune magazine as two of the "25 Best Products of 2004," and that MiraVision has also been honored as one of Time magazine's "Coolest Inventions of 2004."

According to Philips, the HeartStart Home Defibrillator is designed specifically for home use by virtually anyone to provide treatment for the most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It was recently made available for sale without a prescription, making it the first and only defibrillator to obtain over-the-counter (OTC) status.

Designed around the user, the unit provides clear, voice instructions that guide responders through every step of the defibrillation process. It reminds them to call for emergency help and offers CPR coaching, provides voice coaching for CPR, and the appropriate number and rate of chest compressions.

Philips' MiraVision Mirror TV acts as mirror image as well as an LCD TV on the same screen. Using a proprietary polarized mirror technology, the MiraVision transfers nearly 100 percent of the light through the reflective surface.

"It is a great honor to have not just one, but two of our products named by Fortune as a 'Best Product of the Year,' in addition to being honored by Time magazine," said Paul Zeven, CEO for Philips North America. "This recognition is yet another validation of the innovative designs and technologies that Philips provides in our three interlocking domains of healthcare, lifestyle, and technology."
