The Home Safety Council announced that appliance maker Whirlpool Corporation is a recipient of the organization’s new Product Innovation for Consumer Safety Award. Whirlpool is the first corporation to receive this distinction from the Home Safety Council.

The Home Safety Council commissioned study, The State of Home Safety in America (TM) report, found that home injuries are a national problem, causing an average of nearly 20,000 deaths and 21 million medical visits each year. The Councils’ new award was established to recognize outstanding product innovations that help reduce the risk of injury and enhance consumer safety at home.

“Whirlpool Corporation shares our commitment to keeping families safe in and around their homes,” said Home Safety Council president Meri-K Appy. “Whirlpool’s safety testing and safety standards are among the most rigorous in the industry and we applaud their continuous effort to promote safety within the home.”

According to t= The Home Safety Council, from product design and installation to distribution and consumer use, Whirlpool strives to ensure their appliances maintain optimum safety standards. Whirlpool’s appliances meet or exceed Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) testing, as well as U.S. federal and state safety requirements. The company’s product development team is devoted to researching and identifying new opportunities to increase product safety and reduce home hazards. In cooperation with its manufacturing partner, American Water Heater Company, Whirlpool created its Flame Lock(TM) technology that reduces the risk of fires associated with flammable vapors and water heater pilot lights. In addition, Whirlpool has developed a new failure testing system that helps reduce the risk of microwave fires.

“Whirlpool takes a proactive approach to product safety,” said Rick Seib, Whirlpool’s Director for Global Product Safety. “Together with organizations like the Home Safety Council we will continue to work to increase the safety of families nationwide and are honored to be recognized with this award.”
