Sanyo Electric Co. has turned a refrigerator joint venture in Thailand into a subsidiary as part of its efforts to streamline production in Southeast Asia, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a Japanese economic newspaper.

Sanyo said it has boosted its stake in Sanyo Universal Electric Public Co. from an estimated 30 percent to 70 percent and plans to raise it to 90 percent by the end of 2004.

Additionally, Sanyo Universal said it will boost its output of refrigerators by 20 percent to 1.2 million units in fiscal 2005, and Sanyo Electric said it also plans to transfer air-conditioner production at a Singapore plant to the Thai subsidiary in fiscal 2005 or later. (Kyodo News)
