The UK's leading electrical chain Dixons has signed the death warrant of the video recorder with news it is phasing out the appliance by Christmas.

Dixons has already stopped ordering new VCRs and expects to have sold its remaining stock by Christmas, following the boom in demand for DVD players.

Sales of DVD players have grown seven-fold in the last 5 years and consumers can now pick them up for as little as 25 pounds (approx. U.S. .46$).

Dixons is the only major UK chain so far to announce it will no longer sell VCRs following a dramatic fall in demand since the 1990s.

Dixons noted that DVD players were now outselling VCRs by 40 to one.

"We're saying goodbye to one of the most important products in the history of consumer technology," John Mewett, says marketing director at Dixons. "We are now entering the digital age and the new DVD technology available represents a step change in picture quality and convenience." (ShareCast)
