Matsushita Seeks Court Order Against LG Electronics Nov 2, 2004

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. has filed for a court injunction to halt sales in Japan of plasma display panels (PDP) produced by LG Electronics Inc., claiming the South Korean firm is infringing on its patents, Matsushita officials said.

In addition to the request for an injunction filed with the Tokyo District Court, Matsushita asked the Tokyo customs office to suspend imports of the products.

Matsushita argues that LG Electronics is violating its patents on technology to dissipate heat that is generated when PDPs are activated.

The two companies have been holding negotiations over the matter since around the summer, but Matsushita concluded it needed to take the legal step to protect its intellectual properties, company officials said.

LG Electronics' Japanese unit said it will take a legal countermeasure. The subsidiary said Matsushita is also utilizing LG Electronics' patented technology and called the Japanese maker's action "unilateral and insincere." (Kyodo News)
