Black & Decker to Close Manufacturing Plant Oct 21, 2004

An estimated 250 jobs will be eliminated when Black & Decker Corp. closes its manufacturing plant in Ashe County, NC, U.S., the company said.

Production will be transferred to existing plants and other suppliers as the company strives to create efficient use and cost savings.

The transfer will take place in the first quarter of next year and should be completed by the end of 2005.

The plant is part of Black & Decker Corporation's Professional Power Tools and Accessory group, which includes the DeWALT, Porter Cable, Delta, DeVilbiss Air Power, Biesemeyer and Flex businesses.

The plant was acquired by Black & Decker as part of its purchase of the Tools Group division from Pentair Inc. Black & Decker now operates four saw blade manufacturing plants around the world and the duplication of assets forced an evaluation of the global manufacturing, sourcing and packaging strategies, the company said.

All affected employees will be given at least 60 days notice and will be offered severance packages and outplacement assistance, the company said. (Associated Press)
