The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has launched two pilot programs to invite public comments on product safety voluntary standards positions and research reports, according a notice published in the Federal Register.
The CPSC is asking the public to comment on proposed staff positions on voluntary standards and on staff and contractor research projects. The CPSC wants to open staff activities for public review and comment making the agency more transparent and obtaining public input before the agency’s staff positions are finalized.
CPSC staff members participate as non-voting members in a number of steps in the voluntary standards development process. Staff often provides expert advice and research, technical assistance, and injury and death data, and analysis. CPSC staff will typically submit recommendations concerning new consumer product safety standards or modification of existent voluntary standards, often based on previous CPSC research.
Currently, CPSC staff is involved in more than 60 consumer product voluntary standards. For the pilot, the CPSC selected eight voluntary standards on safety mechanisms on various types of appliances such as pool and spa vacuum-release systems, arc-fault circuit interrupters, and garage door and gate operators. In addition, the CPSC is asking for public comment on five staff and contractor research reports that include electric clothes dryers, sound effectiveness of smoke alarms, paper shredder machines, fire indicators, and concentric-ring smooth-top range sensors. Standards and research reports will be posted at a new area on the CPSC Web site where the public can weigh in its opinion.
The new pilot program will be in effect for six months, after which the CPSC will determine if it will extend or modify the program.
