Brazil’s August Industrial Output Expands 13 Percent Oct 12, 2004

Brazil’s industrial production expanded at its fastest pace in more than four years in August, Bloomberg reported. Companies such as BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgerate GmbH pushed their factories to full capacity to meet surging consumer demand.

Industrial output, which includes manufacturing, mining, construction, and electricity generation, rose 13.1 percent from a year earlier, a 12th straight gain after increasing 9.6 percent in July, with output rising 1.1 percent from July, according to Brazilian government officials.

August’s year-to-year increase is said to be the biggest since February 2000, when industrial production rose 15 percent.

Benhard Schuster, president of the Brazilian unit of BSH said at a news conference last week that the company planned to boost capacity at its plant in Hortolandia, in southern Brazil.

“We're having strong demand for our products domestically and internationally," Mr. Schuster said.

BSH said that it plans to boost investment to 35 million reais (approx. U.S. $12.4 million) next year to expand output of refrigerators by 20 percent, Schuster said. (Bloomberg)
