According to research from Freedonia, U.S. demand for outdoor furniture and grills will rise more than 6 percent per year through 2008 and surpass U.S. $6.7 billion.
A generally healthy economy, favorable demographic trends, increases in landscaping and outdoor decorating activity, technological developments, and new product designs will continue to benefit the industry.
Freedonia says that in particular, the combination of healthy replacement activity at the low-price end combined with upgrading to better products will support gains. Growth in shipments is expected to continue to trail demand increases, rising only 4 percent per year through 2008.
U.S. outdoor furniture and grill producers are expected to see increased foreign competition as a significant percentage of outdoor furniture sold at big box retailers is manufactured in Asia, and the amount of imported products sold at specialty retailers has been increasing for several years. The research firm says as a result, a number of U.S. producers operate manufacturing plants in Asia, or maintain partnerships with Asian firms.
