Worldwide demand for digital televisions is expected to more than triple by 2007 as more countries opt for digital broadcasting systems, a Seoul-based market researcher reported.
“Global demand for digital televisions is set to explode in the wake of digital broadcasting expansion worldwide,” Kwon Sang-se, CEO of the researcher Displaybank, said at an industry conference.
"In 2007, demand for digital televisions will grow to 63.5 million units from an estimated 20 million this year," Mr. Kwon said.
Of them, digital televisions with liquid crystal display (LCD) screens will account for 25 million, followed by conventional cathode ray tube screens with 17 million and plasma display panel (PDP) screens with 13 million, he said.
Meanwhile, Samsung SDI Co., said to be the world's largest maker of PDP screens, said at the conference that the firm expects cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs to keep their top spot in the market with the development of new products.
The company also said the new slimmer CRT product could lower the prices of digital televisions by nearly one thirds.
"While businesses and consumers are replacing their bulkier CRT televisions with LCD or PDP televisions, the glass-tube televisions still dominate the market," said Lee Jae-in, an official of Samsung SDI. Among estimated sales of 188 million televisions worldwide this year, sales of CRT televisions will total 170 million, accounting for nearly 90 percent of the market, the company said. (Yonhap)
