Bentonville, AR, U.S.-based retailer Wal-Mart said store sales rose 2.3 percent in September, near the low end of expectations, according to preliminary projections.

The retailer had forecast a same-store sales increase of 2 to 4 percent for the 5 weeks ended Friday, Oct. 1.

Wal-Mart said the sales were an estimate and subject to change due to accounting reconciliations conducted after period end.

Among the retailer’s strongest categories were electronics, with televisions, DVDs, and DVD players continuing as strong sales items.

Wal-Mart said that cool weather in 2003 made comparisons difficult and that the U.S. South and West were the strongest regions for the week.(Reuters)
