Film giant Kodak (Australasia) Pty. Ltd. has announced the closure of its Melbourne, Australia manufacturing plant, resulting in a loss of about 600 jobs.

"It is with regret that I announce the closure of the Coburg manufacturing plant," Kodak Australia Chairman John Allen said in a statement.

The plant will stop operating as of Nov. 26 this year, and most of the affected employees will leave the company on Dec. 2.

Mr. Allen also said the company's wholesale photo processing lab at Coburg will be closing on Oct. 22.

"These closures have been caused by the fundamental change in consumer behavior driven by the increasing popularity of digital photography in Australia and worldwide," Mr. Allen said.

He added that the decision was not influenced by the performance of the plant, nor by Australian economic, industrial, or political factors.

Kodak (Australasia) Pty. Ltd. is part of the U.S.-based Eastman Kodak Company. (ASIA PULSE)
