Samsung SDI Co. remained the world's top producer of plasma display panels PDPs during the second quarter of this year, an industry report said.
Display marketing agency Display Bank said the PDP output by Samsung SDI during the period amounted to about 187,000 units, claiming 22.8 percent of the market. This is the third consecutive quarter that Samsung SDI retained the top ranking.
The South Korean company was followed by Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. with 173,000 units and South Korea's LG Electronics Inc. with 161,000 units.
The combined PDP output by South Korea's major manufacturers claimed a market share of 42 percent during the first half of this year, up from 36 percent last year.
Japanese companies had a portion of 55 percent during the same period, down from 61 percent in the previous year.
The price of a standard-size 42-in screen fell from U.S. $1,300 at the end of last year to $960 per unit, as supply overwhelmed demand since the first quarter. The 40-in panel liquid crystal display fell slightly from $2,500 to $2,300 per unit.
This year will see the production of PDP screen double year-on-year to 3.48 million units with the brisk operation of production lines, followed by 6.3 million units in 2005, the agency predicted. (Yonhap)
